Our Mission Statement
Under the auspices of the president, the Office for Institutional Equity provides institutional leadership in enhancing respectful, diverse, and inclusive work and learning environments for the Duke community.
We offer a range of services that uphold values of equity and diversity as well as support compliance efforts in the areas of equal opportunity, affirmative action, and harassment prevention.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Our staff provides consultation, needs assessment, strategy design, coaching, and a range of dynamic educational workshops and learning solutions related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Our programs are designed to raise awareness, increase understanding, and enhance skill development to optimize the working and learning environments at Duke.

Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action
The equal opportunity and affirmative action (EO/AA) area offers university-wide guidance on Title VI and VII of the Civil Rights Act, and Title IX of the Education Amendments Act and the Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistant Act. We also serve as the university's liaison to the federal government in matters of contract compliance concerning equal employment opportunity. EO/AA develops the university's Affirmative Action Plan, oversees its implementation, and reviews employee recruitment, hiring, and other personnel actions.

Harassment Prevention, Nondiscrimination, and Title IX
The harassment prevention, nondiscrimination, and Title IX area administers, implements, and monitors Duke’s harassment and discrimination policies. We provide advice, assistance, and education to individuals and groups about issues concerning harassment prevention and non-discrimination, including complaint handling. We also address gender equity in the workplace and classroom, working to ensure that Duke complies with Title IX, a federal law banning sex discrimination.
