Duke Institute for Brain Sciences Offers Small-Group Discussions
The The Duke Institute for Brain Sciences (DIBS) Inclusion and Power Dynamics Team invites you to join small-group discussions on the topics below. They will create a confidential, highly participatory safe space in which to share different perspectives, learn from others’ experiences, and build a supportive community.
Each topic will be offered twice to allow for different schedules. Sign-up is limited for one session per topic (maximum of 3 sessions) and groups will be limited to 10 participants. Registration is required; please click HERE.
Facilitator: Melissa Segal, LCSW, is a licensed clinical social worker who has provided individual, couples, and family counseling; facilitated a variety of support and educational groups; and implemented professional development and training. She is currently the Senior Business Manager of Duke Neurobiology and its Diversity & Inclusion Leader.

With the pandemic, we have seen an increase in racism and xenophobia, including microaggressions, verbal hostility, prejudice, and physical violence. In this safe space, we will share our experiences, fears, and ideas for promoting safety and inclusion for all people at Duke.
Striking a Balance. Wed., June 10, 10-11:30 a.m. & Fri., June 12, 1-2:30 p.m.
How do we maintain balance when we work and live in the same location? In this safe space, we will discuss how we juggle work deadlines, families, and time for ourselves.
Addressing Power Dynamics. Wed., June 17, 10-11:30 a.m. & Fri., June 19, 1-2:30 p.m. — Open only to students, postdocs and staff.
Whether or not we work remotely, power dynamics are part of an academic setting. In this safe space, we will discuss hierarchy in academia, share ideas for navigating situations with power differentials, and brainstorm how to promote a positive work culture.
