Healthcare and Systemic Racsim

Speaker
Dr. Uche Blackstock
As an ER physician and one of the country's leading health equity advocates, Dr. Uché Blackstock has a deep and hands-on understanding of how systemic racism is affecting the health of BIPOC communities across the country. From well-documented research that shows how clinicians of all races underestimate Black patients' pain to the consequences that substandard housing can have on health, Dr. Blackstock opens her audience's eyes to the social determinants of health and why we cannot reform healthcare without addressing systemic racism.
Blackstock will speak at Duke as part of the Sanford Lecture Series. Endowed by the William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust, this prestigious lecture is open to the public and the entire Duke University campus. The lecture series intends to promote engaged and enlightened leadership. The lectures are held in honor of the late Terry Sanford, a bold leader who served as North Carolina governor, U.S. senator, president of Duke University, and founder of the Sanford School of Public Policy. Event partners include the Sanford School of Public Policy, Duke Black Policy Student Association, Duke Alumni Women's Weekend, Center for Health Policy and Inequalities Research, and Duke Sexual and Gender Minority Wellness Program.
